★★★★★ 5.0 · 10 Reviews on Google · 5Jersey City's Private BJJ Instructor
In a group class, the instructor is managing a room. In a private lesson, every minute is yours. Brian watches your posture, corrects your base, and explains the mechanics behind each position until they click — not until class time runs out.
Progress in BJJ comes from understanding, not repetition alone. Private lessons accelerate that understanding because the curriculum is built around your gaps, not a general syllabus.
Whether you've never stepped on a mat or you're a seasoned competitor looking to sharpen specific areas — private instruction delivers results that group classes simply can't.

One instructor. One student. Full focus.

"The detail is everything. Anyone can show you a move — I want you to understand why it works so you can make it yours."— Brian "Chaos" Richards
Four disciplines. One instructor. Sessions built entirely around you.
Traditional BJJ
Technique-first instruction using the gi uniform. Positions, escapes, submissions, and the principles behind each — built for beginners and experienced grapplers alike.
Ideal for: beginners, competition prep, students who want a strong technical base
Without the Uniform
Fast-paced ground work without the gi. Wrestling, leg locks, submission chains, and positional control — applicable to sport grappling and MMA.
Ideal for: sport grapplers, wrestlers transitioning to BJJ, MMA athletes
Real-World Application
Practical defense using BJJ principles — distance management, clinch control, takedowns, and submissions designed for real situations, not sport rulesets.
Ideal for: people with no prior experience, anyone focused on personal safety
Ground Game for the Cage
Ground control and submission threats tailored for mixed martial arts — takedowns, top pressure, back control, and finishing under MMA rules.

Student Experiences
"I came in with zero experience and Brian met me exactly where I was. He doesn't rush anything — by the third session I actually understood what I was doing and why. That makes all the difference."

Common Questions
None at all. Brian works with complete beginners through advanced competitors. Your first session is built entirely around where you are right now — no prior mat time required.
For Gi classes, bring a gi (rashguard underneath is recommended). For No-Gi or Self-Defense, athletic shorts and a rashguard are all you need. Water and a positive attitude handle the rest.

Use the booking form at the bottom of this page — pick your session type and a preferred date and time (Mon–Thu, 7–10 AM). Brian reviews every request and confirms within 24 hours. You can also call or text him directly at 347-489-9564.
Gi training uses the traditional jacket and pants — the grips create more control opportunities and slow the pace for detailed technical work. No-Gi is faster, using friction-based grips and athletic shorts, and translates directly to wrestling and MMA.
Yes. Small-group sessions for 3–4 students are available at $1,200 for 6 sessions — roughly $100 per student per session when split three ways. A great option if you already train together.
